When Something Needs Doing, People Step Forward: Volunteers Week

Volunteers' Week is a UK-wide celebration of the people who give their time, skills and energy to support the communities around them.

At Kehillat Nashira, volunteering is not something done by a small group of people behind the scenes. It is woven into the fabric of our community.

Every Shabbat, someone prepares children's activities, someone organises kiddush, someone leads the service, others lein from the Torah, chairs are set up and stacked away, washing up gets done, emails are sent, finances are managed, newcomers are welcomed, committees meet, and events are organised. Often, these contributions happen quietly and without recognition.

One of the things that makes Kehillat Nashira special is the way people simply step forward when something needs doing.

Recently, one member reflected on watching people begin carrying tables after kiddush. No one had been asked. No announcement had been made. People simply saw what needed doing and got involved.

That spirit is what allows our community to thrive.

As part of Volunteers' Week, we wanted to recognise just a few of the many people whose contributions help make Kehillat Nashira possible. These examples are only a snapshot. There are many others who give their time and talents throughout the year, and we are deeply grateful to all of them.

Supporting Community Life

For many of us, kiddush is where conversations continue, friendships are formed and newcomers find their place within the community. That warm atmosphere depends on a great deal of planning and practical work.

The Gazvey family have shown remarkable dedication in organising and supporting kiddushim, helping create a welcoming space week after week.

Miriam Westbrook has provided longstanding leadership and coordination for our children's programming, helping ensure that younger members of our community have meaningful opportunities to engage and participate.

Leadership, Service and Stepping Forward

Communities rely on people who are willing to take responsibility, often behind the scenes.

Chana Baram has given countless hours through her work as Gabba'it and by stepping forward as Interim Chair, providing steady leadership during an important period for the community.

Joe Roukin is known for being willing to help wherever needed, whether that means practical support, transporting equipment, or taking on the many unseen tasks that help our events and services run smoothly.

Building for Now & the Future

Some volunteering focuses on the present. Other contributions help shape the future of the community.

The Maraney family led our Purim packing event in partnership with Gratitude, bringing community members together to support others while creating a meaningful shared experience.

Jonny Hart has dedicated significant time and expertise to helping lead our new building project, guiding an important chapter in Kehillat Nashira's future.

And finally, Gary Sakol and Victoria Dadds have both been recognised for their enthusiasm, energy and willingness to get involved, helping create an environment where people feel comfortable taking part.

Alongside this, we want to acknowledge all of our leiners, daveners and community teachers. Their learning, preparation and generosity make our services and educational programmes possible. They are part of a much larger group of volunteers who help hold our community together. In many ways, most people who come to shul contribute something.

Thank You

Volunteers' Week gives us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate those who give their time to strengthen community. At Kehillat Nashira, we know that our community exists because people choose to contribute. Some volunteer publicly. Others work quietly behind the scenes. Some take on formal responsibilities. Others simply notice what needs doing and help.

Every role matters.

To everyone who volunteers in any capacity, whether occasionally or regularly, visibly or quietly, thank you. Your time, commitment and generosity help make Kehillat Nashira the community it is.

And if reading this has inspired you to get involved, there are always opportunities to contribute. You can find current volunteering opportunities and community roles on our Community Jobs Board, and help shape the next chapter of Kehillat Nashira. Or you can also join one of our volunteer rotas: Kiddush Krew, children's services, the Gabba'im team and security rota. There is always room for more people to get involved.
