Pesach Through the Eyes of an AI

Each year, the Haggadah invites us into an act of imagination:
“In every generation, a person is obligated to see themselves as though they personally left Egypt.”
It is a powerful idea, but not always an easy one to access.
This year, we tried approaching that question from a different angle. We asked AI to reimagine the Exodus story with us in mind.
In one image, the sea is splitting in the distance. At first glance, it feels familiar. But look more closely and the details shift. The Jewish people are not carrying bundles on their backs, but wheeled suitcases. They are dressed for cold weather, wrapped in anoraks. Some are looking down at their phones as they move forward. It is recognisably our world, layered onto an ancient moment.

In another, Egypt itself feels reimagined in a more modern setting. The Nile runs through a landscape of high-rise buildings and neon-lit streets, echoing the first plague in a way that feels both familiar and unsettling. Pharaoh appears slightly perturbed drinking what looks to be a cocktail - of blood?

These images are not meant to replace the traditional story - they open up a different way of engaging with it.
Click below to see a small gallery of AI-generated images exploring these ideas. You are welcome to browse them, and if it you'd like, to print a few and bring them to your Yom Tov table as a starting point for conversation.
Warning: some of the illustrations are intense and include graphic elements, reflecting the drama and stakes of the Exodus narrative.
