90 second musings on the week and the parasha on a grey old English afternoon with Hannah Gaventa. Before Avraham was "Avraham Avinu" he was a human on an uncertain path. He had huge doubt about his future and asked Hashem for reassurance. He too lived in a world of tyrants, a world where people were kidnapped and taken hostage (specifically here Lot, with Sarai also threatened) a world where idols were worshipped (so much midrash) and people pursued their own individual gain at the expense of those around them (see the battle of the 5 Kings).
Yes, Avram already showed immense generosity of spirit (offering Lot the pick of the land), bravery (rescuing Lot) and selfless morality (refusing to benefit financially or personally from the war).
Yet he was also searching, uncertain, afraid, lonely and in need of comfort. Thank you Avram, for showing that even you can feel these heavy feelings.
