1st night of Chanukah - Part of Kehillat Nashira's 8 nights of Chanukah series for 2024

We’re thrilled to kick off Kehillat Nashira's 8 nights of Chanukah Series with a thought-provoking message from Rabbi Miriam Lorie and Avidan Halivni, the associate director of the Jewish Learning Collaborative.

Drawing from the ancient wisdom of Pesikta d'Rav Kahana 23:1, Rabbi Miriam reflects on Chanukah as a season for sparking light in dark times.

“All it takes is the tiniest glimmer of light to conceive an entire universe... Right now, the natural world seems dead, but it’s already preparing for its rebirth in Spring and Summer - the buds are growing."

Rabbi Miriam ends with:

"I’m praying for many good things to be seeded at this time, which may we may only see much later.”

Rabbi Miriam also gives a shoutout to the incredible work of the Jewish Learning Collaborative, an organisation that connects educators like her with people eager to deepen their Jewish knowledge.

In the accompanying video, Avidan Halivni dives deeper into this concept, adding his own insights about the Kabbalistic idea of whether the world existed before creation; the hidden potential of small actions and sparks.

Take a moment to watch the video and reflect on this idea as we light the first candle of Chanukah together:

Stay tuned for tomorrow, as we continue to celebrate Chanukah with different members of our community.

Chag Sameach!
