Last Sunday, we celebrated Rabbi Miriam receiving her semicha (rabbinic ordination). This historic milestone marks Kehillat Nashira as the first community in the UK with a female Orthodox rabbi, and we are honoured to have celebrated this occasion with our community and supporters from all walks of life.
The event was a tapestry of activities, delicious food, and heartfelt speeches. The sight of picnic blankets spread across the lawn, families chatting, laughing, and enjoying each other's company, was heartwarming. As always, food played a central role in the celebration. Yummy salads were supplied by Soyo, while the kids enjoyed hotdogs and choc-ices.
The bouncy castle was a major attraction, providing endless fun for the children. The arts and crafts were enjoyed with sparkly stickers scattered across the lawn. A special thank you to Tilla for leading the adults in making beautifully bound miniature books. The event was made colourful by festive decorations from Sheara Abrahams and face painting by Laura Samuels.
The formal presentation was a highlight of the celebration. Rabba Dr. Lindsey Guthartz-Taylor and Rabbi Dina Brawer delivered speeches that honored Rabbi Miriam's achievements and the significance of this milestone for Kehillat Nashira. Rabbi Miriam's own words resonated deeply with all in attendance. She spoke of her journey, her commitment to the community, and her vision for the future. The moment was made even more special as her father concluded with his heartfelt remarks. Interspersed throughout the formal presentation, well wishes poured in via video messages from supporters around the world. Watching these messages was lovely and underscored the historic nature of Rabbi Miriam's achievement.
To commemorate the day, a beautifully designed booklet was handed out to all attendees. This keepsake encapsulated the spirit of the celebration, featuring messages and reflections on this special occasion. You can view the booklet here:
