This week, Rabbi Miriam Lorie is joined by her friend Reverend Catriona Laing, and together they share their thoughts on Parshat Ki Teitzei in a 90-second video reflection.
She shares:
Look out for the great big ox!
Great to have Rev Catriona Laing's take on Ki Tetze, in which one of the 74 mitzvot (the most of any parasha in the Torah) is to return a lost object, which leads to a huge body of laws we call hashavat aveida. But out of all the objects, the Torah picks an animal, part of the natural world, as its example.
Rashi draws on the unusual and repeated language of "seeing" and "hiding" in this verse, to teach about how we shouldn't hide ourselves from an uncomfortable reality, or pretend we haven't seen a pain or need in the world. So yeah, look out for the ox.
