  • 6pm - Holocaust memorial talk by Margaret Pritchard Houston, who tell her grandmother's story: 'I started out as one who stood by and did nothing.' - a rescuer's story. In 1942, 22-year-old Dutch social work student Marion van Binsbergen witnessed Nazi atrocities against children in her home city of Amsterdam. This led her to get involved in the rescue movement - over the next three years, she lied, stole, committed fraud, and even killed, in order to defend the lives of her charges. Starting in the 1980s, she began speaking publicly about her experiences. Her oral history is included in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and included in the film Shoah, as well as in books such as Rescuers and The Courage to Care. She has a tree in her honour in Yad Vashem and held honourary citizenship of Israel. She died in 2016. This coming shabbat, we are honoured to be joined by her granddaughter, Margaret Pritchard Houston, in person in Borehamwood to share her grandmother's stories and honour the Jews and non-Jews who worked together to save the lives of others.
